The learning curve of the first delivery is zen
The first delivery is important. It sets the pace on the following runs. In fact, the first delivery paves the way for the rest of the delivery shift. Furthermore, it has a definite effect on the delivery experience for the courier. There’s nothing technical about it. And there’s no insight that improves the odds on the first delivery. It’s a matter of getting the learning curve out of the way. Then the real fun can begin.
A delivery shift can run for several hours. And thanks to apps and gig-work a courier can work through the day and into the night. However, it all starts with that first delivery completion. From there the deliveries can flow. It is not uncommon to accept offers from the queue back to back. Furthermore, at the height of the dinner rush, hours can pass in the blink of an eye.

With this in mind, it’s that learning curve that sets the pace. The first delivery. Crew couriers regard the first delivery in the shift, as a way to get warmed up. Indeed, the faster the completion of the first one, the better. Similarly that holds true for the solo courier. Once the solo courier starts a delivery shift with an app, getting the first offer completed is paramount.
The Learning Curve and Zen
The peaceful flow of deliveries can feel like zen in motion. At least that is one way of describing a delivery shift that has few, or no snafus. In fact, that is a goal of the experienced courier. To make delivery completions with very few, or no, distractions. Likewise with mix ups and snafus. These small events that cause delays and deviations in the process, cost time. Furthermore, they are avoidable in most cases.
It has a lot to do with the mindset. A courier’s mindset is just as important eight hours into the shift, as it is at the beginning. Furthermore, it is the beginning that sets it in motion. This is where the learning curve meets action, and the tone of the entire shift forms. The quicker and smoother the first delivery is, the more likely there will be a steady flow from there.

The speculative part of this is the zen. However, couriers have methods. It’s a necessity to have a method if money is to be made from a delivery shift. Similar to driving style, the way a courier approaches the first delivery is significant. Even though the process is the same from drop-off to drop-off, no two deliveries are the same. Therefore, the beginning of a delivery shift, should be energetic at least.
The First Delivery
Getting warmed up is not unusual. Athletes warm up before playing in a sport. Singers warm up before performing on stage. Similarly, a courier warming up, is not all that unusual. Being sharp, and in the moment, is a positive way to improve the chances for an increase in earnings. Furthermore, it makes a noticeable difference to the delivery customer.
Most delivery customers are experienced, and familiar with, at home delivery. Likewise, the at home customer is near the expert level with tracking. This isn’t hard to believe. In fact, the courier can test the notion. All it takes is a route deviation. Or a delay at an apartment complex. Within moments there will be communication from the drop-off location.
Fortunately, these are things the courier can influence by using hustle and accuracy. Especially after the learning curve is out of the way. That opens the door for a long stretch of delivery completions. And that’s bread and butter for the courier. Stay safe out there.
