The hot pursuit delivery – Tales of the Courier

Every delivery is different, in one way or another. That is, if it can be found. Some delivery locations may not exist at all. At least that’s how 1courier feels as he brings the ride to a halt in front of the strange location. In fact, it took some doing to even find the place. Now, as he looks out his window, he wonders if he actually has found the place. It looks deserted. It looks just like the kind of place found at the top of an isolated hill like this one. He checks the m-com link for his navigation map. And he’s in the right location.

So why did everything about it feel absolutely off base? 1courier takes a moment and gives a slow, deliberate, look around. The place didn’t just look deserted. It was more than that. It has the feel of a long vacancy. Maybe it’s in the vibes of the place, but it feels so desolate, it’s almost disconcerting. Furthermore, there is every indication of long neglected maintenance. The lot was so overgrown, it was possible to see the layers of the years in the weeds.

1courier unbuckles and steps from the ride. He grabs the cargo from the rear seat and moves toward the front porch. Something moves in the front window. Too fast and furtive for 1courier to make out anything. He’s beginning to reconsider his first impression. Maybe the place isn’t so deserted after all. He takes a couple more steps and then two things happen simultaneously. The m-com link flashes and there is a low, but heavy sounding crash, from inside the house.

    Hot Pursuit Delivery

He is closer to the m-com link, than the crashing sound, so he decides to pause and see what is so urgent. Besides, he probably imagined the sound. As if to reassure him of his sanity, it happens again, only slightly louder this time. So he eases back to the side of the ride, and reaches in for the m-com link. The crashing sound happens again. And much louder this time. He begins to think it’s time to retreat. In fact, he doesn’t need to see the m-com link to know he’s in the wrong place.

    hot pursuit

While still holding the cargo, he quickly jumps into the driver seat. As he pulls his door closed, the front door of the house bursts open with a tremendous crash. 1courier is already in reverse, and spinning the ride in a lightning fast 180 degree turnaround. He barrels back down the driveway, determined to stay well ahead of the hot pursuit. Checking the rear view mirror, he sees nothing. It makes no sense, but he decides to stay well ahead of it. Whatever it is.

The m-com link holds the change of address. That was the last minute message. He was saved by the bell. Furthermore, it couldn’t have come at a better time. It never fails. Abandoned places have a particular feel. It’s as though the emptiness of the years pulses through them. Quiet speak and hollow, it is no less real. Is that what chased him from the place on the hill? 1courier studies it some more as he pulls into the new drop-off location.

    Tales of the Courier

He shakes the m-com link and checks it again. Over to his left the abandoned house stares blankly at him. In fact, this place is so abandoned, he doesn’t need to get out of the vehicle. This makes no sense. There’s no way the system picks two random abandoned places in a row. As if to accent his thought an impossibly loud crash comes from within the abandoned structure. It’s so loud he can hear it in the ride. Furthermore, after that, he’s surprised the place still stands. The sound was loud and almost purposeful. And menacing?

1courier shakes the m-com link again. He knows it’s pointless, but the double naught delivery has him on edge. Two abandoned places in a row. Furthermore, the m-com link appears to be a part of the mystery. Especially considering each one of these redirects have come from the unpredictable device. Another loud crash from inside the old abandoned house. This one is so loud and forceful that a front window breaks. Once again 1courier is already on the backspin. Time to go.

This time he sees the front door of the house explode outward as he barrels down the driveway. However he watches it in the rear view mirror. And as far as he can tell nothing comes out the door. Unless. He downshifts the ride, and slams the accelerator pedal to the floor. If he’s right, it’s probably already too late. The vehicle roars forward. Likewise, the tires dig into the jagged asphalt of the old driveway and push the ride even faster. Over in the passenger seat, the m-com link flashes. New message incoming.

    Hot Pursuit Hand-off

The m-com link flashes…and the ride stalls. 1courier immediately scans the dash. Then the controls, and finally, pumps the accelerator pedal. Nothing. The ride begins losing all momentum and the slow down is exponentially fast. He scans the rear view for any hot pursuit. Still nothing. Which is a relief. But this system’s failure is out of the blue. He scans the dash again, but gets no further clues. Finally, when he’s at full stop, 1courier jams the shifter into Park and keys the ignition. The m-com link flashes furiously, in the passenger’s seat.

    hot pursuit

The starter grinds away but the motor will not fire. 1courier suspects this is the end of the line for this trip. This is looking like a tow truck issue. He checks the rear view mirror again. Instinct has him on edge. This was all a bit too coincidental. As he picks up the m-com link from the passenger seat, it flashes again. He is either very popular, or something is terribly important. Somehow he doubts it’s about his star power.

Therefore, the m-com link activity must be important. He opens the link. It’s definitely important. Something slams against the back of the ride. Hard. He doesn’t feel surprised in the least. After all, the message on the m-com link explains everything by summing it up into a one word explanation:

    “GOTCHA!”

    To be continued…
