Stuck in the middle with only one clue

Stuck in the middle with only one clue

Ever get that feeling something was right there, but impossible to see? It’s similar to that feeling of having unseen eyes watching. Or knowing for a fact the car keys were just in your hand before the phone call, and now they’re gone. Without a trace. However, they are still around somewhere. The feeling of being right next to the missing object, but unable to find it, is vexing.

With this in mind the average delivery drop-off is not difficult to find. Especially with the technology available in today’s world. Even without the technology most places are found using old school techniques and knowledge. Except for when they are in the middle. Then it’s about the best technology, and the power of magic, joining together to open a portal revealing the location.

Although that sounds pretty awesome, and would be great, it is not true. For one thing, if the courier was able to perform magic, the tip would be a million dollars. Also the drop-off location would be plainly visible. Therefore it must be something other than magic, or the best technology, that can reveal a place stuck in the middle.

    Stuck In the Middle

At this point it might be helpful to talk about the drop-off located in the middle. Or more specifically, what being in the middle means to the courier. There is a particular kingdom located in the middle. However that story will continue soon. At the moment we want to find a location hidden in the middle. Somewhere.

Most every courier has encountered this at one time or another. Especially when using a GPS navigation system. Just like there are ghosts in the machine, there are glitches on maps. Sometimes they are known and sometimes not. One of the most tricky ones, is the delivery location stuck in the middle of two distant roads. Furthermore these locations are only accessible one way.

    in the middle

In fact, if not for special instructions, the courier would waste resources searching. Searching for a driveway, that may or may not be there. In the example screenshot above, there is even a name for the hard to locate area. However, most often, the courier will see the location on the map. There will also be a recommended route. And this is the one clue.

    Only One Clue

The place in the middle will appear to be in the middle of nowhere. Far away from nearby roads, it will seem to be by itself. The recommended route may look correct, but if followed, becomes a dead end. Similarly, the route back to any alternative route, will consume extra resources. This is the difficulty when there is a drop-off location in the middle.

This is also something that can happen on ridges and hillsides. The GPS gives the best approximation for the route. However, there are things it cannot take into account. For example, driveways that start on the other side of the ridge. Even though, on the map, the location is accurate. This is where the special instructions, and delivery notes, can save the day.

Checking the special instructions can save valuable resources. Most delivery customers have experienced the GPS glitch in the roughest way. Their hot fresh food was lost on the road. Cooling rapidly. It took several phone calls, and lots of special instructions, before the courier finally located the delivery customer. Therefore most delivery customers want to avoid the hassle on the next delivery.

    In the Middle

Adding special instructions to the delivery order, benefits the customer, as much as the courier. The time it saves is at the top of that list. Checking for special instructions, and monitoring incoming messages, is a best practice for the courier. Likewise, it gives the courier more than one clue, to successfully complete the delivery. Stay safe out there.
