Safety drills in delivery and how to benefit from them
It is a safety dance every step of the way. The process begins on the road. First the courier accepts an offer from a delivery queue. Then it’s a quick drive to the pickup location. From there, it’s out to the drop-off. Then at the drop-off there is the unknown. Especially if it’s after sunset. Some front doors have the right light at night. Others, not so much. It’s those dark unknown circumstances that trigger the uneasy feelings. This is when safety drills in delivery can make a difference.
It might sound like preparing for a disaster. Or an emergency preparedness plan. And there are similarities. However, safety drills are an important part of the courier’s tool kit. Furthermore, they have more to do with preparation than emergency response. In other words, it’s an exercise in preparedness. For example, knowing how to use the safety measures in a delivery app. There are more than a few delivery apps. Additionally, they all have some form of safety measures.
Taking time to get familiar with the safety measures in a delivery app, is what safety drills are all about. Familiarity with the available safety options, prepares the courier just in case. Furthermore, the safety options in a delivery app are some of the quickest ways to get a location to the appropriate emergency response system. In fact, while the courier has a delivery app open, tracking their location is easy.
Safety Drills in Delivery
The idea of prioritizing safety in delivery is a good one. Once upon a time, delivery driving had the title of one of the most dangerous jobs. Especially in the days when cash payments were the norm. This stigma wasn’t just about the high risk of daily long duration road use. Anyone using the road to make a living understands the elevated risk of traffic and driving. Therefore, it was more about the risk of robbery, or foul play.

Some couriers mitigate this risk with self defense mechanisms. Furthermore, their preparation works because of personal safety drills. This is important because couriers are often in dark, unknown places. Some of those places are intimidating because of the sheer isolation of the location. Therefore practiced safety drills are most effective in keeping calm.
Even if it’s just peace of mind in a stressful situation. Preparation is key. This includes things like awareness of the surrounding environment. And paying close attention to things that don’t feel right. The gut instinct is real. When in doubt don’t get out. Use the phone to call the drop-off location. Or send a text. All this can be done from the safety of the ride. Additionally, the ride is a safe haven. One that can be utilized. If a situation feels off, remaining in the ride means driving to a safer location is an immediate option.
The Benefit of the Safety Approach
The best delivery is safe delivery. This is where the courier can also be proactive. Taking steps to prepare for unexpected issues, is the essence of safety drills. Similarly, vehicle maintenance qualifies as a safety drill. A well maintained vehicle is a safer vehicle. Keeping up with maintenance promotes the reliability of the vehicle. Nothing says horror movie like a car that won’t start in a dark unknown place.
With this in mind, vehicle maintenance is the essence of preparedness. Between the safety measures in the delivery app, and the alert courier, a safer delivery is the goal. Keeping up with safety measures, ensures a safer delivery completion. This is bread and butter for the courier. And one of the biggest reasons to stay safe out there.
