Nighttime delivery and a better way to find the mark

Nighttime delivery and a better way to find the mark

It’s that time of day again. It recently began happening, just after lunch. With this in mind, things are about to get slower. That does read slower. With the recent time change, more deliveries are being completed in the darkness of night. At, what feels like, late afternoon.

Furthermore, it is during the delivery rush. Not only are the drop-offs in the rush, but also after dark. Consequently there is a slow down. The early darkness, and the rush together, create a slow down.

The experienced courier knows the details of this scenario. The earlier night fall is a catch 22, so to speak. On the one hand, it encourages and spurs on a positive rush. On the other hand it complicates the delivery with difficulties only experienced in the nighttime delivery.

    Nighttime delivery

For example positively identifying the actual drop off location. This is important in more ways than one. Furthermore, GPS is great but not infallible. Having more than one way to confirm the drop-off location is a positive step in the right direction.

    Nighttime delivery

With this in mind, the previous article to this one encourages contact with the customer prior to the drop-off. In this way, the courier can be sure the drop-off is handled in a timely way. Without difficulties such as knocking on the wrong door.

One thing is for certain, there is not a delivery completion at the wrong door. Furthermore, there could be many difficulties at the incorrect door. However it isn’t always possible to get the customer on the line, for the discovery of the right door.

When this happens the courier is down to using clues and the process of elimination. Remembering the basic rules of addresses and streets is a positive step toward a nighttime delivery completion. And finding the mark. One of the first things a courier needs to know upon entering a neighborhood is which way is what.

    A better way

By getting two or three good reads from the passing mailboxes a courier can get a general idea of the layout of the neighborhood. With this info it is possible to find the block or cluster of addresses the courier needs. From this point, technology can be a helpful tool for completion.

If only the courier wasn’t the only one using it! All kidding aside, between the GPS and the countdown of the numbers (mailbox or house numbers) the courier should be close enough for the app to present the next step. Depending on the type of delivery it is, the courier will still need to complete the delivery steps.

This is one way to complete an after dark delivery with minimal contact or information. Additional techniques will be in upcoming articles. Stay safe out there.
