In the loop courier for better delivery completions
The best deliveries go off without a hitch. In fact, they’re almost boring. The pickup is right on time. Similarly, the drive to the drop-off location is smooth, with no delays. Then it’s, leave at the door, and snap a quick photo. From there the courier’s job is done. Time to go to the next delivery. Although it sounds boring and repetitious, it is anything but. Repetitious yes, boring, no. There’s too much that can go wrong in a successful delivery, for anything to be boring.
With this in mind, couriers rely on communication to provide quality effort. When the courier is in the loop, communication becomes a tool for better drop-offs. Particularly if there are special instructions. Or, last minute special messages. These are even more important than special instructions. Mainly because they happen in real time. Usually while tracking the courier. That last second, special message, takes precedent.
Furthermore, the issue may not be drop-off related. Or it might be an attempt to smooth out an already difficult situation. For example, a failed delivery. Or a remake. This is especially relevant for the courier using a delivery app. Accepting a new delivery offer from the queue, doesn’t always mean a fresh start.
In the Loop Courier
A new offer from the delivery queue doesn’t always mean a fresh start. In fact, it’s possible to be right in the middle of a previous something. Although it could be any number of things, here are a few of the most common.
- The Previous Courier didn’t complete the delivery.
- The order was wrong, and this is a remake for a second delivery.
- Items were missing from the previous delivery drop-off.
- There was a mix up in the address on the previous delivery attempt.
All of the examples have one thing in common. The courier doesn’t have to be in the loop to complete the delivery. However, in order to complete the delivery flawlessly, the courier needs to be in the loop. Let’s take a look at the examples above and see if they can show why it’s so important for the courier to be in the loop.

The previous courier didn’t complete the delivery. The courier getting this second delivery request, doesn’t necessarily need to know there was a first delivery attempt. However, it would be nice to know why it failed. Knowing what to look out for, if there’s something to look out for, is helpful. For example, emergency road closures, and unexpected detours. Or a location on the map that is new, and doesn’t pin correctly.
There’s more than a few reasons why a delivery may not make it. Therefore keeping a close watch on in app messages is important. Real time updates are an effective way to avoid an incomplete drop-off.
Better Delivery Completions In the Loop
The order was wrong, and this is a remake for a second delivery. This is why the offer was not in the top tier. And it’s one of those things, where making some money, is better than sitting still making no money. So the run should be quick, but if the courier isn’t in the loop, the problem could repeat itself. For example the courier misses a key part of the pickup. The same as the previous courier.
In this scenario, the chances are good that the at home customer will try to message the courier. It will most likely be an effort to prevent another incomplete delivery. Additionally the merchant will sometimes alert the courier to the special requests in order to prevent another remake.
Items were missing from the previous delivery drop-off. It does happen. Sometimes the courier forgets the drink. That is definitely on the courier. Especially if the drink is in the order, on the dispatch screen. However, there are times when more than a drink is missing. Sometimes on larger orders, one or two items may be missing. Merchants that seal their packages might overlook an item. Depending on the merchant this might be a reason to send a remake to the at home customer.
Quality Delivery
Whether it’s a remake of a failed delivery, or a replacement for missing items, the courier works best when in the loop. Getting in the habit of scouring the delivery app for updates, or changes, is not a waste of time. In fact, it can ultimately save time. Keeping a watchful eye on the messages for updates, is crucial for real time adjustments.

Especially with quirky addresses. And when the address is new, or part of a new development, GPS information could be non-existent. Or the pin location could be a best guess of the GPS. In remote locations, this can cost time and resources, if too far off the mark. Most at home customers know if their address is challenging. Therefore, they will add special instructions on the dispatch screen.
However, some at home customers prefer to communicate in real time. They often reach out in the text, or message area, of the app. In some cases they may even call. Answer that call, for best results. And stay safe out there.
