How to move up the rating scale as a freelance courier
The rating scale is real. Every courier deals with it somewhere. It can appear as a series of smaller ratings. Or it can be part of a larger array of ratings. A group that combines to form an average. Nevertheless, the rating scale is real and every courier benefits by being on the higher end.
This is an important area for every courier. Crew couriers as well. Ratings are a basic part of being in a delivery service position. In fact, it can be thought of as a type of resume for the courier. One that stays updated. Additionally, the ratings cover a large number of areas. And it seems that more pop up every year. For example, the arrival time of the courier. Or the percentage of verified completions.
Those, and many others, can paint a fairly accurate picture of the courier’s work. When taken as a whole, the ratings can be averaged. With this data, a courier has a chance to appear on the high end of the ratings scale. If the scale is a star scale, the courier may be a four out of five star courier. Similarly, a percentage scale might show the courier with 88% out 100%. That ratings scale is flexible.
How To Move Up the Rating Scale
There’s not a quick answer to moving up that scale. Especially one that uses averages. However, it can be done. Furthermore the approach is an individual process. Most every courier is aware of their ratings in any given app. Crew couriers will sometimes see star ratings in real time, on a dispatch board. This is where the work begins.

The lowest rating is a good place to start. For example, let’s say the courier has a less than stellar arrival time rating. An adjustment here can improve the average for the whole rating. Most likely the courier will know why the rating is low. Couriers with a low acceptance rating, decline a greater amount of delivery offers. One way to rise up that scale, is to accept more offers from the queue.
The same goes for a low completion rating. This one is an easy fix. Finish more accepted deliveries. Things happen sometimes. But consistent, unfinished deliveries, are the most serious of bad ratings. Not only will it cause a slide down the rating scale, but also could lead to being banned from an app.
The Consistent Climb
It takes some hustle and attention to detail, and consistency is key. Once a courier addresses an issue with a rating, being proactive in keeping it there, is a best practice. Furthermore, the consistent effort will pay off in a higher average for the rating. And the interesting thing is the potential for an increase in earnings. An unexpected, but nice, payout for improving.
With this in mind, an improved courier, is a benefit for the delivery customer. A courier that is rated low for missing things in the special instructions, improves every delivery by improving the rating. In fact, it would benefit all the courier’s future delivery customers. A boost in earnings could also go along with the improved rating. With the overall effect of a nice, and steady, climb up that ratings scale. Stay safe out there.
