Watch the new law first – Tales of the Courier

If it’s late, it’s a downright shame. Early is good. Likewise, on time, is satisfactory. But late? 1courier slams the accelerator pedal to the floor. The ride rockets forward. There would be no late on his watch. In fact, he was planning on early.

His mind keeps going back to the mysterious message from HQ. What did it mean?

He’s been on this run for almost an hour. In terms of the far away, this one was far and away. Normally, something like this would be the last thing he looked at. But something about the location hooked him. Now as he rockets down the highway there can be no mistaking the directions.

All the rules have changed. In fact, this might be the end of an era. An era that began from inconvenience, but grew in popularity. Now, as 1courier nears the drop-off location, he must prepare to hand the cargo to a human. Of course he wasn’t the only courier able to see the drawbacks to the new law. What if the drop-off recipient wasn’t home? What if they didn’t come to the door?

    Watch the New Law First

Doorbells and stairwells. Just two items, on an almost endless list of obstacles. Before the new law took effect, couriers didn’t know how good they had it. Just drop, click and run. Drop off the cargo. Then click a picture of the cargo laying at the door. And finally, run. Run away. Get moving. Split the scene. Likewise, do whatever it takes, to be on to the next delivery.

    new law

Of course the new law would have consequences. For example, a slow down on every delivery run. 1courier eases off the speed as he rounds the next bend in the road. He would be there in less than three minutes. Then, he had no other choice but to meet someone at the door. Furthermore, there were no other options for a fail safe drop off.

1courier checks the m-com link again. He already knows the destroy order is in effect. He just needs one more look-see, to confirm he is actually awake. The destroy order is a go. Therefore, if he cannot find a human to greet at the door, he will have no other choice but to destroy the cargo.

    Tales of the Courier

He’s at the door. Just a minute more, and this one is in the books. He is ignoring the way the seconds are stretching out with no answer at the door. He refuses to believe he has found the problem delivery from the get go. However, the door remains closed, and there is not so much as a peep from inside the building.

1courier knocks again, then he tries the doorbell. Silence. Then he gives it another, louder knock this time. And still no one answers the door. So he knocks again. Harder this time. Hard enough to cause the door to swing open.

The door swings open. At that moment the m-com link flashes. There is an update in the instructions. The cargo is to be placed on the table. Inside the building. 1courier grins. Always a loophole. He steps into the dark room, and gets ready to drop, click and run. He has only just set the cargo down, when a voice speaks to him from the darkness:

    “Hello there 1courier…remember me?”
