Traffic and red lights, better earnings with road strategy
Traffic and red lights are a part of the job for the courier. In fact they are top considerations for anyone using the road to make a living. Traffic is a big part of route selection for the time sensitive courier. Furthermore using a road strategy, a courier can save more than just time.
With this in mind, it is possible to save time with a proper road strategy. Additionally, the better a courier knows an area, the better the chances for faster completions. Especially if the delivery area is in a city with road construction. Or a growing city. On any given day, a road can be shut down for construction. This creates detours and more traffic.
Traffic and red lights
One of the top strategies a courier can use, is red lights. Being selective with red lights is a way to navigate heavy traffic quickly. Or at least quicker than sitting still. This strategy is meant to find the least amount of red lights to suffer, before a drop-off location is achieved.
Furthermore, this is the strategy to get the route with the fewest red lights. There are times when this might mean a slightly longer distance traveled. However, the extra distance traveled is negligible. Especially when time is saved.
This is best described as follows. One route is a shorter distance. But it has many red lights and slower speed zones. The other route is slightly longer but has no slower speed zones and no red lights. Therefore, the longer route, will actually save the most time.
This is a quick judgement call on one delivery. The courier should be interactively debating this criteria on each offer from the queue. This will give the courier the best chance to improve earnings. The improvement will come from saved time and better route selections.
Road Strategy
It is also important for the courier to keep in mind the GPS does not always select the best path. Additionally, the courier may have reasons why another route is more appealing. It might be that there are fewer road changes. Or perhaps the GPS suggested route is too congested with stalled traffic. No matter the reason, a good road strategy is bread and butter for the courier. Stay safe out there.
