Tips for All Day Road Time and Emergencies

Long days on the road are sometimes necessary to make ends meet. Couriers spend large amounts of time on the road. Much of that time in and out of the ride, into rain or snow or blazing heat, and occasionally a pretty day.

All while on the road. Having a day out on the road is fun and it’s easy to pack for a day of adventure out and about. What about day in and day out though? All day everyday. Having a good and comprehensive setup not only makes this possible, it primes a courier for success.

    Setting Up

A good setup. This is a key component to a successful day’s work on the road. It includes several things that assist in completing deliveries quickly and consistently. It starts with all that maintenance.

When a ride is well maintained, it’s more efficient and reliable, two things that are essential for a long day on the road.

    Basic tools

A basic tool kit. A full mechanic load out isn’t necessary, basic is good and covers a lot of basic repairs:

    • Pliers
    • Channel locks
    • Screwdrivers, (1) phillips (1)flathead
    • A standard ratchet/socket set*
    • Hammer
    • Portable air inflator/pump
    • Extra jack (hydrolic preferred)
    • Needle nose pliers

    Provisions

Bringing a lunch is an excellent strategy because there isn’t a need to stop or wait in a drive through. Packing extra water and other beverages also saves time and keeps the wheels moving.

Fill the tank and don’t idle for over five minutes. Since the costs are rising for fuel, conserving fuel is a smart strategy. Look for every opportunity to save fuel, and the pinch at the pump won’t hurt as bad.

As for emergencies, a first aid kit is safety conscious and important. Road flares and caution pylons are another great safety precaution, that helps in an emergency scenario. Keeping the phone charged is also one less worry to deal with in an emergency situation.
