The standard delivery tip and the best effort delivery
Every delivery is different. This has been a common theme in many articles on this site. Every delivery is different. However, the process is always the same. Pick something up at point A. Then haul ass to point B and drop it off. Sometimes there will be a customer to meet at point B. Other times, point B is like a deserted ghost town. Additionally, the delivery cargo has to be left unattended.
With this in mind, a solo courier relies heavily on a tip, to get paid. The service the solo courier provides, is at their own expense. When this is compared to a crew courier, the difference in pay, can be wide. Therefore, the standard delivery tip is as important to the courier, as the delivery is to the customer. However, the standard delivery tip is usually on a sliding scale.
The idea that a standard delivery tip can fluctuate, isn’t new. Nor is it exclusive to a delivery app. Crew couriers also deal with a fluctuating tip system. However, a crew courier isn’t always aware of the delivery tip ahead of time. In most cases the solo courier accepts a delivery offer because of the tip. And the crew courier is often in the dark, until after the delivery completion.
The Standard Delivery Tip
With this difference in tipping systems, it can sometimes be difficult for the courier to predict basic earnings. Especially the solo courier. Similarly, the solo courier relies on the delivery queue to scout offers, and build a paycheck. After some experience accepting delivery offers, and then completing them, the standard delivery tip becomes more apparent.

It works out as the sum of the accepted offers. And the mileage of the same. Furthermore, the miles a solo courier travels, should relate closely to the accepted tip offers. For example, if the courier makes twenty dollars in tips, the miles traveled should be near twenty. Plus or minus three. Respectively.
This is also a positive way to gauge the earnings. It is a formula that keeps the solo courier from losing money. Either through lost resources, or over extending resources. Moreover, it sheds some light on the standard delivery tip. Considering there is no formula to calculate a standard delivery tip, this is an effective way to do so.
The Best Effort Delivery
Most couriers give a best effort delivery on every run. The idea that good hustle pays is a proven concept. Furthermore, it benefits the courier, and the delivery customer. If that means a better than average standard delivery tip, so much the better. Perhaps in the future, a better system for tipping a delivery driver, will evolve.
In the meantime, it’s catch as catch can, for the solo courier. However, that isn’t always a bad thing. Occasionally, very generous offers appear in the queue. Just like when a crew courier occasionally receives a better than average tip. Therefore, the standard delivery tip formula, is still under development. Something to look for in the future. Stay safe out there.
