The road runner surprise – Tales of the Courier
It doesn’t take long. 1courier makes the drop-off, and it’s road time again. The road is the place to be. Lately that’s been a little hard to achieve. Waiting is something most couriers avoid. Even the red light, is too long of a wait, for most couriers. 1courier thinks back to his previous delivery. Too much waiting. From the pickup of the cargo to the drop-off, there was too much wait time. It’s impossible to be a serious road runner, while standing around waiting.
The road ahead disappears into a blind turn. 1courier downshifts and uses velocity to dig into the curve. Out the other side, and he floors the accelerator. The ride bites into the road, and then blazes down a long stretch of smooth highway. It is night and the stars are visible on the horizon. The road unwinds eternally before him, and just for a moment, the path is visible once again. Its glow, ethereal and wispy. However, this isn’t a part of the highway. It’s something less defined and much deeper.
At least the two are one at the moment. The path isn’t always on the road. Sometimes it’s separate from the road. His musings end abruptly as the *m-com link lights up. Looks like another run is in the queue. He quickly examines the details. This looks like a pass. Maybe the next one will be the one. He moves to dismiss the offer. Then the voice happens. And everything changes.
The Road Runner Surprise
“Aren’t you going to accept that offer?” It comes from somewhere in the ride. 1courier checks the audio system. Yup. It’s turned off. He checks the rear view mirror. The voice didn’t come from there. However, he is not alone on this stretch of highway. In the distance behind him, there is another road runner. Neither gaining, nor falling behind. Therefore, he returns his attention to the m-com link. Still time to accept the offer. He reconsiders.
Then, he does accept the offer. Not because of the mysterious voice. Although his curiosity intensifies by the second. Instead, he accepts the offer because the voice has some explaining to do. Furthermore, there must be something about this offer, if he’s being nudged to go for it. 1courier checks the rear view again. The vehicle behind him remains at the same distance as it was before.

Now for that strange voice. He clears his throat and chooses his words carefully.
“I don’t believe I’ve been properly introduced.” he downshifts the ride and runs another curve on the highway. Silence, and the roar of the engine, are the only sounds inside the ride. He tries again, “Hello! Anyone home?” The silence spins out and now the m-co link begins to flash again. Apparently there’s an update on the delivery request he just accepted. He begins to open the m-com link and the voice decides to speak at last.
“Probably not a good idea to open that. You won’t like what you find.”
Tales of the Courier
“You won’t like what you find.” The words linger in his mind. First the strange voice prompts him, and then refuses to be sociable. Furthermore, it’s trying to predict his delivery. 1courier grins, and opens the m-com link. He’ll be the judge of what he likes and doesn’t like.
He absolutely doesn’t like what’s in the m-com link. In fact, he snaps it shut, and considers cancelling this delivery. What was HQ getting at anyway? In what universe does any courier ever team up with another courier? He floors the accelerator pedal, and races down the highway with reckless abandon. Not this universe, he thinks. That’s when he notices the vehicle behind him. It’s now directly on his rear bumper. 1courier checks the speed. Too fast for average rides. The one on his bumper, must be high performance.
He checks the m-com again. Now, he is within a few miles of the pickup location. Furthermore, it appears he will have a partner for this run. With this in mind, he studies the *m-com link details. What is it about this delivery that requires a partnership with another courier? However, he doesn’t get long to dwell on the issue, because the vehicle behind him presses forward quickly. Then it lightly rams the rear bumper. 1courier grips the wheel tightly, and holds the ride steady as the voice pipes up again.
“Howdy partner! Nice to meecha! Tag! You’re it!”
