The parted way of destiny – Tales of the Courier
1courier looks at the ticket, and pockets it. Then, he returns to the ride, and drives away. The warehouse district has a reputation for its tactics. At least he has the cargo. Now, to get it delivered. This was the sticking point in the delivery. The drop-off location was notorious for trouble. In fact, it is a restricted zone. However, HQ was looking to expand. And 1courier was the delivery scout.
It wasn’t the destination that created the bad publicity. The outlands were actually picturesque. The rolling hills have pockets of woods covering them. Similarly the roads are tree lined, and shady on hot summer days. 1courier appreciates the land. It was the city of Tellis that could be a troublesome pain in the ass.
The city of Tellis resides in the center of the outlands. The drive to Tellis is enjoyable. The ride through Tellis is not. However, on the bright side, it’s a short trip. His drop-off point is on the other side of Tellis. With any luck, this will be a delivery completion, before lunch.
The Parted Way
Traffic jam. Right at the city limits of Tellis. So much for the quick trip through. Furthermore, the traffic delay was due to a wreck, or event. He checks the m-com link again. Twelve minute delay. Cause: Traffic accident. According to the map he was only five minutes away from the accident site. Then the map shows the road clearing. He will be past it soon.
Five minutes later he nears the accident site. It’s a mess. Several large heavy freighters have collided and blocked most of the road. There is room for one lane of traffic to pass. 1courier inches the ride along. Up ahead the traffic is passing the accident and zooming away. Soon he would be zooming away. Oh to be free and zooming away. He grins. Soon.
Damaged freighters cover most of the highway. The traffic inches by, and 1courier is alongside the accident now. He can see how the vehicles tangled, and how two of them, lost their loads. The third is sitting perpendicular to the highway. 1courier eases the ride past the tangled wreckage. He blinks. And in the same moment senses, more than sees, a flash of light.
Tales of the Courier
He senses, more than sees, a flash of light. The wreckage is past him now, and he floors the accelerator pedal. They are blazing down the highway again. Additionally, he is past the city limits sign. And he has left Tellis. He will be at the drop-off in under five minutes. It will be a relief to have this one complete.
He still feels the effects of being in Tellis. Fortunately, there is a route to go around it on the way back. He can’t remember the last time he heard a courier compliment the place. Up ahead, the street he needs. It was all but completed now.
The Parted Way
He senses more than sees a flash of light. 1courier is almost past the wrecked freighters. As he passes the last of the wreckage, he sees the exit ramp into Tellis, and takes it immediately. Furthermore, the traffic is normalizing, and the exit is uncrowded. As he makes his way into the city of Trellis he has an uncanny feeling of deja vu.
Although the roads are clear, and the drop-off location is near, something is off. 1courier checks the m-com link and finds no irregularities. However, his intuition is telling him something has happened. He checks the m-com link once more. Now the mapping system is showing him in two places. What the…? However, there is no time to find any answers, because in the next moment all hell breaks loose.
