The Moonlight Spirit Run – Tales of the Courier
(Continued from Play It Down Again Sam)
It is dark in the tunnel. And the mood is grim. 1courier sits patiently. Listening. For now, all is quiet. Both inside, and outside, the tunnel. The m-com link sits quietly in the seat beside him. It is fortunate this alternate route exists. And even more fortunate that he is not lost in the badlands.
With this in mind, he checks the rear seat. The cargo is safe and secure. At least there’s that. However, every minute spent hiding in this tunnel, is one more minute of delay. Therefore, it is paramount that he is ready to move. Just in case. The light at the end of the tunnel, is slowly fading from day to dusk. It will be dark soon. He might have a better chance after dark. It wouldn’t be much longer, and the tunnel has long since been abandoned. So he’s not expecting company.
The roadblock crew is likely searching for his exit point. In fact, he pulled a nice disappearing act. 1courier grins. His magician skills are at their peak. Similarly, the route back will be difficult to find. He picks up the m-com link and begins studying the map. Having real time info about the available roads is useful. A badlands radar system could be even more useful. Definitely something to recommend to HQ.
The Moonlight Spirit Run
The m-com link begins to flash. At the same time, 1courier sees the faintest traces of a spotlight. It appears to be searching the area outside the tunnel. It won’t be long before the tunnel is located. Then, he really will be trapped in the badlands. He couldn’t let that happen. This run is about more than just the cargo. HQ is gathering intel through the metrics of this run. Every turn, every drop in speed, and every hard brake, is being monitored.

Additionally, this is one of the last places to cultivate for deliveries. In the history of personalized delivery services, the badlands have never even been mapped. HQ has it on good authority that there is much more here, than anyone knows. As if reading his thoughts, the sweeping beam of the spotlight pauses. The tunnel opening lights up, and now 1courier knows, the jig is up. Time to fly.
He keys the ignition, and the ride roars to life. Time to be like invisible ink, and disappear. He grins, and slams the accelerator to the floor. The ride leaps forward. 1courier pushes it hard, and blazes out of the tunnel opening like a shot. According to the m-com link, he will need to move west as soon as possible. The way ahead is clear, so far. Looks like no one was expecting his hasty departure.
Tales of the Courier
1courier pushes the ride for all it’s worth. Likewise, he studies his dilemma. What is so important about this cargo? It certainly doesn’t look valuable. However someone, or several someones, are determined to stop this delivery. Furthermore, he still had a ways to go, before clearing the badlands. Moreover, there is now a more pressing concern. He is running out of fuel.
The fuel gauge is nearing the Empty mark, rapidly. Likewise, he still has another twenty miles before clearing the badlands. Once he reaches the Nalphia city limits, things will change. The local authorities in Nalphia, monitor every road into the city. However, if he runs out of fuel before then, he is toast. 1courier doesn’t like toast. So he makes a judgement call. And slams down the brakes.
Moonlight Spirit Run
The ride comes to a screeching halt, and 1courier jumps out of the front seat. He keeps more than a few trophies from the road. Hubcaps are his favorite. Sometimes he finds other things too. A few days ago he found an unopened bottle of alcohol. 1courier doesn’t drink.
However, the ride does. He can hear the vehicles approaching from the direction of the tunnel. They are gaining fast. He quickly drains the bottle of booze into the fuel tank. The headlights from his pursuers are fast approaching. He jumps back into the front seat of the ride, and fires it up. Time to go.
