The guaranteed delivery and how it actually began
A delivery is a contract arrangement. Depending on the status of the courier. Even when the courier is part of a crew, there are still contract elements to the arrangement. It is still largely a service, based on a measure of trust, and good will. Furthermore, the courier acts as a goodwill ambassador. Ideally, this is the process.
In fact, this has been the process since the concept of delivery started. Hot fresh food delivery, that is. Having personally observed the changing ways of the home delivery model, certain insights were gained. For example, the year of 1984. Pizza delivery in 1984 was another world compared to today’s system. For starters there was no GPS, on hand held devices.
The guaranteed delivery
Companies that were attempting to pioneer the delivery model, were using wall maps. Couriers were memorizing street names. Additionally, they were writing down those numbers. The process was old school. However, in those days, it was state of the art. Not the tech. The concept. The idea of getting a meal delivered to the house, was astounding. Or at least, wildly luxurious.
With this in mind, it is important to remember the whole system was new, in those days. No trial and error tests, for reference, were on the books. Yet. Every time a delivery went out, that, was the trial and error test.
Furthermore, the whole deal was a novel concept for those days. And almost no one knew, such a thing as hot fresh food delivery, was available. It started as a localized service. In other words, only those living close to the merchant offering delivery, knew about the service.
As time marched on, the concept of at-home food delivery, matured and grew. Soon, more merchants were doing it. It started with one company making a go of it. And the rest is history. However, the early days of delivery were no picnic. The honor system was the only way to successfully complete a delivery. Therefore, as with any system, it didn’t take long for things to become strained.
How It Actually Began
That is one reason couriers only carry twenty dollars, or less, in physical cash. One of the first obstacles for the at-home fresh food delivery, was theft. Couriers faced the threat of robbery, on almost every delivery. This eventually became less of a concern as payment methods became more varied. Cash was no longer the only form of payment accepted.
Through time, delivery moved from the honor system to the guaranteed system. It was something exclusive to the early days of delivery. Sometimes, time, brings about positive changes. When remembering the early days of delivery, much stands out, in comparison to today’s system. With this in mind, it’s easy to say, things are much improved. Stay safe out there.
