The full moon delivery, how to back out alive
We’ve all been there at one time or another. Maybe it’s a visit to a relative’s house. Or perhaps going to a friend’s new house for the first time. Then there are times when a wrong turn leads to a very tight situation at the top of a driveway. This is part of the job description for the courier.
However, it isn’t the top of the driveway that matters so much as how to back out. Especially if that hill is steep. Throw in some gravel, and a slide down backwards is almost a guarantee. Especially if there’s no room at the top to turn around. A carpet of pine needles means a much faster slide.
If it’s also dark, there is a ten point bonus, for difficulty. Right about now is when the courier is reviewing how this pickle evolved. Nevertheless, the courier gets the points at the bottom of the driveway. That is also the sigh of relief point.
The full moon delivery
Sometimes getting to that point is a test of nerves. Other times, the test of nerves is in the work at the top of the driveway. Usually the courier’s vehicle is the extra one, in a driveway that has vehicles already. This means far less room to maneuver. In some cases there is no room. That’s the moment of truth on the back down.
With this in mind, it is helpful when there is a full moon in the sky. Not only is it cool, but also it illuminates. Small ditches and large rocks become more visible in all that illumination.
Furthermore the edges of the driveway, road or path become more visible. In some cases it is dangerous to stray too far over the edge of the driveway. Therefore keeping a careful watch on that rear wheel is a good idea. Then it is a matter of working the brake and steering.
In extremely dark situations, flashing the brake lights is useful for getting a sense of contrast between that dark patch of earth, and the darkness of a sheer drop off. However, be gentle on the pedal, and remember it’s a technique to gain more light, quickly.
How to back out alive
After the motion is started and the back down has begun, it is important to look back up the drive for alignment. It’s an extra measure for safety. The back down can be done mostly through watching that rear wheel or using the rear view. A quick glance back up the driveway, helps align the vehicle in the driveway, just in case.
This is all made possible by the brilliant full moon. And a sensitive brake pedal. The good news is once the courier reaches the sigh of relief point, it’s on to the next. Stay safe out there.
