The first easy go delivery – Tales of the Courier
A road day is a good day. 1courier grins as the ride careens down the highway. This road is an anomaly. It has no beginning. And, so far, no end. 1courier thinks this is how every road should be. The delivery is slotted for a destination far ahead. In fact, it is so far ahead, that a lunch stop may be needed. Furthermore this delivery is the first of its kind. Therefore, everything on this journey, is an experiment.
With this in mind, he checks the m-com link. There are no new instructions. He feels a sense of relief. These prototype deliveries often have special instructions. Then, en route, everything changes. What was once simple, becomes complex. However, so far at least, there have been no changes. He closes the m-com link and floors the accelerator pedal. It would be a bonus, if this delivery is completed early.
1courier watches the road rush toward him as he thinks about the other couriers. There were seven of them. All selected for the easy go delivery. Seven that knew the risks. And all seven accepted the offer. Likewise, all seven went in different directions. HQ was after the wider coverage area, and only the most experienced couriers, could meet the deadlines. Especially for the first easy go delivery.
The First Easy Go Delivery
The road stretches into the distance. The horizon is forming hues of blazing color, as the day dwindles into early evening. With ever increasing curiosity, 1courier checks the m-com link. Surely he was getting closer to the destination. However, the navigation system denies that assumption. In fact, the Navigation system, shows that 1courier is just a few miles away from where he started.
He checks the system again. It is still the same. So he shakes the m-com link like a magic eight ball from the past. Nothing. It remains the same. Apparently after driving for several hours, he is only a mile or so away from his starting point. Judging by the scenery flashing by the laser fast ride, he is quite a bit further along. Something is off.
The navigation system must be glitched. So he gets back to the basics. The first is to determine how far he has traveled since leaving HQ. Based on the position of the sun, and the time he has been traveling, that is easy. With this in mind, he should be within thirty minutes of the destination. He checks the m-com link once again. It is now calibrated to his precise location. He grins. How odd this delivery is.
Tales of the Courier
Thirty minutes later he pulls into the wrong location. The m-com link glitched three minutes before he arrived. He knows it’s the wrong place because he was chased out by a very large and irritable robot. Furthermore the back of the ride took quite a wallop from the bot. Must have been a junkyard bot. 1courier grins, and keeps the ride racing onward. Until the road ends.
He slams down the brake pedal, the ride fishtails, and slides on screeching tires. He blinks in disbelief. The road goes on forever. Except for this one. 1courier steps out of the ride, and takes a look. The road does indeed end. Right there at his front tires. Furthermore, he is still over a mile away from the drop-off location. A quick check of the m-com link confirms. The way forward will be by foot. Therefore he retrieves the cargo from the ride, and begins the walk.
He has only gone a few dozen steps before the realization hits him full on. His feet are becoming increasingly heavy. In fact, he can barely lift his foot from the craterous ground. This fact is driven home when he can no longer raise his feet at all. He is now barely shuffling and even that is slowing to a stop. The cargo is becoming heavy and he shifts it to the other shoulder. Likewise, he tries with all his might to move, and barely manages a grunt. Then a pair of oddly shaped hands, burst up through the ground, and grab him by his shins.
The Dusty Trail
An odd sight for an empty road. There is a vehicle parked in the middle of the road. A few paces away, on the road, are several packages. There are fresh tracks leading up to the packages, but none afterward. The wind gently pushes the dust into a lazy spin wheel. The spin wheel dances all around a couriers hat. The only other thing, on the road…
