The expendable delivery and the truth about tips
A successful delivery shift is the goal of most couriers. A steady series of delivery completions is the job. This is the most efficient way for the courier to maximize earnings. Furthermore, a steady rush of delivery offers, keeps the delivery shift in high gear. Therefore, having a workable strategy, is beneficial to the courier. One basic but effective strategy is, no wasted motion.
This strategy is more like a guide. It is efficient, and wrapped in a safeguard. With this strategy in play, a delivery shift becomes a series of purposeful moves. Especially for the crew courier. The crew courier enjoys some predictability with every delivery. For example, merchants with an in-house delivery crew, have a finite delivery zone. It is typically five miles, as the crow flies.
The Expendable Delivery
Some merchants go a little further. Some, not as far. It depends on the store manager, in most cases. With this in mind, even the most efficient courier can hit a snag now, and again. Furthermore, this snag can slow things down so much the entire shift becomes, at risk.
This is when the expendable delivery comes into play. It is the delivery the courier can release, to save an entire shift. Even though the sound of the scenario is extreme, it does happen. Furthermore, the only way a courier can disengage from the delivery gone bad, is to release the run.
This scenario is an extreme measure, and should only be used in the rarest of circumstances. Additionally, an app like Door dash, will allow the courier to release the run, in an extreme wait situation. Penalty free. The courier decides how extreme, the situation is.
Truth about Tips
This one topic is the most intense, among couriers. Mainly because the tip is the bigger part of a courier’s income. Especially the solo courier. Without the tip there would be less incentive to provide the service. Additionally, if the tip becomes secondary, or non-existent, the service will suffer.
Couriers rely on tip income, to reinvest in equipment, expenses and supplies. Not to mention paying a bill or two. For the courier, this is why good hustle, and timely completions matter.
Know a shortcut? Use it. Save some time. Keep the cargo in heat bags, and upright. Communicate with the drop-off location. Save more time. Hustle a little bit more. Always work during the rush hours. All of the above will help offset low tips. Keep hustling. And stay safe out there.
