The best substitution method for a stalled delivery
It isn’t always there. Sometimes the merchant runs out. Other times the delivery truck hasn’t arrived. Whatever the reason, the pickup has come to a complete standstill. Additionally, it isn’t going to move, unless the courier can lend a hand. However, that doesn’t mean it’s time to get behind the counter. Nor is there a need for the courier to sweep the lobby. In fact, only the courier can help with a substitution.
This is one area the courier can’t help but specialize in. It’s also a common scenario. Especially with late night delivery. In the last couple of hours before close a merchant may run out of certain items. Particularly on-sale items. Specialty items like that, don’t last long. Therefore, the courier will experience times when an item is out of stock. Most merchants are okay with a substitution. That is when the courier needs a fast substitution method.
The substitution method is about quickly reaching the delivery customer. The faster the courier can establish contact, the faster a resolution can be found. This isn’t always as easy as it sounds. Many delivery customers do not watch for unexpected messages from the courier. In fact, set it and forget it, is sometimes the norm in delivery.
The Best Substitution Method
So why does the courier have to help with a substitution? Why can’t the merchant handle it? In fact, shouldn’t that be done before the courier arrives for the pickup? It would be nice. And it would help save some time. Besides, what does the courier know about the merchant’s menu?

The answer would be – about as much as the merchant knows of the delivery customer. In other words, not a whole lot. Other than the name, the delivery customer is a mystery to the merchant. Or, more accurately, the contact information is a mystery.
However, that is one vital piece of intel. And the courier has it on hand. Additionally, it is easily accessible. For the courier. This is the biggest reason why the courier needs the substitution method. It will resolve the stalled delivery and get the courier back on the road.
The Stalled Delivery
The first step is to move quickly. Text the delivery customer right away. Calling is fine too. However, not everyone answers phone calls. Especially from an unknown number. Getting the text out there, simplifies things if a phone call becomes necessary. Furthermore, it gives the courier a chance to list the possible substitutions.
Most merchant staff are ready to answer the request for substitution possibilities. They want the pickup complete as soon as possible. While the courier waits for a response to the initial text, it’s possible to list those substitution choices in a followup text. All of this, is a potential substitution method. Furthermore, the faster a courier can get an answer, the better.
A stalled delivery can take an alarming amount of time to resolve, if the courier cannot reach the delivery customer. The substitution method in that scenario would be some sort of rebate. However, the courier doesn’t have the clout to offer that type of substitution. The courier can only facilitate communication where there would otherwise be none. Stay safe out there.
