The Art of the Redlight and Door Kung fu
Today’s world has redlights. If there is a road, somewhere along its course there will be a redlight. Cities typically have many roads and even more redlights.
It’s unusual to be in a large metropolitan area that doesn’t have a plenitude of redlights. It’s also usual to think of those redlights as disadvantages, when in fact they can be an extremely useful tool.
During rush hours, traffic volume is an ever changing situation. It can take twenty minutes to cover two blocks when the traffic is extreme. Waiting to get to that one spot, to make that turn can take all night, in some cases.
The Art of the redlight
That’s when the redlight can become a very useful hack, for beating all that traffic.
With deliberate route planning and some thinking ahead, a redlight can be used to stop traffic and clear the way. This allows the courier to take advantage of traffic to control traffic, and proceed in a timely manner.
Using redlights as an advantage is a great technique in a densely populated area. It is also a safe way to navigate extremely crowded roads, helping to decrease risky traffic maneuvers.
Door kung fu
A courier travels to many different locations while doing the job. The pickup and drop off locations are some of the more important ones for a courier.
The drop off location can be anywhere, and in any condition. Most of the time it’s a private residence.
Occasionally that residence has a rather extreme driveway. Navigating the driveway is one part of the mission, and it can be a difficult part depending on the severity of the driveway.
Once done however, there is that work to finish at the location, which means getting the cargo to the door. But first the courier has to spar with the ride’s door.
Door kung fu happens when parked on a steep hill. When parked on a steep hill or driveway, gravity influences the doors. Trying to disembark the ride, while the door keeps knocking the courier back in the ride, is a tricky scenario.
This is when door kung fu becomes necessary. It’s up to the courier how great the battle will be, more things to carry when stepping out, means the struggle could get messy.
Especially if that car door whacks the courier and the cargo, while trying to step out of the ride.
Pro tip: The backside technique works best, in deflecting that door. Also while offloading cargo!
Safety is always the top priority for a courier, and if a situation looks or feels unsafe it is a good idea to rethink and regroup. Parking at the foot of a steep incline and walking the cargo to the drop off, is also an excellent way to get the job done!
