Tales of the Courier – The Whiskey Run
The rain is falling mightily and the ride is out of fuel. 1courier stares out the windshield. He had known there would be no way to make the new destination, without fuel. As did the captain of the outpost.
As he watches the rain fall against the windshield, he grins. Whiskey is available. The spirits are here to save the day. He grabs one of the bottles the captain gave him, and jumps out of the ride, into the rain.
This delivery was in 2universe and here, combustion engines were still the norm. Not every universe was as advanced as 1universe and Earth.
The Whiskey
The rain is torrential and he is drenched in seconds. He opens the fuel lid and leans over the opening, to shield it. Then, empties the bottle of whiskey into the tank. Finally, closing the lid and moving quickly, he climbs back in the ride.
No point in trying to dry off, so 1courier takes a second to consider the destination. The crossroads of Nalphia. It isn’t lost on him that the original destination, was unaware of this delivery. Destination changes, mid delivery, were very rare.
Similarly, outpost deliveries were more rare. He thumbs the ignition and the motor spins while soaking up some spirits, then fires with a rough but solid idle.
1courier doesn’t waste the combustion elixir by sitting still. He floors the ride and gathers the road, as the rain continues to hammer down.
Whiskey Run
He’s been to the crossroads on several occasions, however, he has never liked the place. It is strange, and has an odd feel to it, as though someone’s watching it. The m-com link flashes and alerts that the drop off location is requesting an ETA.
It has been thirty minutes since 1courier drained the whiskey bottle into the ride. He pulls over to the side of the road and grabs the second bottle of whiskey and empties it into the tank. Next stop the crossroads.
Twenty minutes later he is arriving at the crossroads location. There are only three buildings here. The mail house and the tavern, as well as the station house. He turns the ride towards the street with the station house, before seeing the armed sentinel.
The flash of light is blinding and seems to knock the wind out of him, as it also destroys the front of the ride. He feels the ride summersaulting and he takes a brief siesta, while it does so.
