Tales of the Courier – The Runaway Gambit
He’s falling, fast. He knows there is snow, and wind, freezing to the bone wind. And it slices through him as he falls. Then he strikes something in the chaos of the fall, and he somersaults through the air and tumble/lands into a deep snow bank. The package lands close by with a muffled, heavy, thump. The silence in the snow bank is deep and contrasts heavily with the noise from the chopper and Port City, from just a few moments ago.
He allows the silence to spread through his mind, before digging and working his way free from the deep snowdrift. Then he makes the final push and struggles free, rolling to the snow covered ground. The wind shrieks and wails, he begins digging the package free. Additionally he knows he must work quickly. Otherwise he will freeze if he remains exposed for too long. He reaches the package and grabs it, he sees–
Stars and galaxies of stars throughout the vastness that is universe he understands there is more but it resides beyond what he is designed to see he grasps at impossible connections as he slowly begins to realize he is being watched –

He stands at the side of a road, and it is night. There is no snow, or wind. The air is still, and heat rises from the asphalt of the road. There are stars but they are in the night sky, far above. He looks down at the slightly heavy and oddly shaped package that he is holding. It has stopped making the odd vibration now, but still hums softly.
Choosing a southward direction, he begins walking. Then he shoulders the package, and lengthens his stride. He had to find some wheels and get this done. He remembers her eyes, his heart moves, and with great difficulty, he clears his mind. Furthermore, it was best to stay on point. At least until he knew where the hell he had landed.
His instincts tell him the AI knows more than a little about this, this what? Then he begins to consider the effect of all this hocus-pocus. And the package continues to hum softly as he treks along. Got to remember to drop the thing the next time it activates. Was activate even the right word for what this thing was doing? Wasn’t for him to figure out, his job was to get it to the client.
In fact, that’s what he was going to do. The outlands were easy enough to cross, there was section 71, but every run had risks. Additionally, it was beyond the outlands that mattered. Exposure was guaranteed, and he was down one ride. He pulls the tracking hud from his pocket and scans the terrain. He’s looking for anything to identify his location. Indeed, too much road, and no ride.

He is being watched again. He continues walking, there is no one around, he’s checked the hud every ten minutes. Then, the distant sound of a motor approaching fast, captures his interest instead. The ride rolls smoothly to a stop beside 1courier. The window rolls down and cheeky greets him in that too cool, all steel way. ” virtual dispatch requests your immediate return”.
Laying the package in the backseat, and quickly getting behind the wheel, he floors the gas pedal. The ride leaps forward and begins chewing up road. He’s on it southward, hellbent and determined now. ” One hour thirteen minutes until section 71 entry”, the AI’s voice is cool, and matter of fact, in tone. ” no attempt to dissuade?” he replies. The AI speaks something about orders and sanctions, his mind’s back on the silent watcher.
Courier
Barreling through the night, the ride handles the road easily. Furthermore he should have bypassed Port City and headed straight to the out-lands to begin with. Always go with the old gut. In fact, he is thinking this, as a very bright light erupts inside the ride. He has just enough time to think-shit– before the ride is being blasted and riddled with heavy gunfire. The AI begins announcing their arrival in section 71, as all hell breaks loose, and the ride stalls…to be continued– here – Tales of the Courier
