Tales of the Courier – The Random Box Pickup
The countdown is approaching zero and 1courier tries to start the ride again. Nothing. He wonders briefly, how a cutting edge, AI powered prototype can stall. At any time, much less, a moment of great peril.
The countdown is almost at zero, the rocket boosters of the galaxy class spaceship, are directly above 1courier and the ride. He ducks inside the ride, trying one last time to start the machine.
The countdown reaches zero, the ride does not start. The roof of the ride becomes transparent instead. 1courier appreciates the humor, even if ill timed and terror invoking.
The boosters of the spaceship fire, at the same moment, the ride comes to life and leaps forward. 1courier is clear of the launchpad by a mile in no time. When he is no longer stuck to the seat, he breathes a little easier.
The random Box
The ride is racing away from the launch, of the finely crafted, galaxy class spaceship. The m-com link flashes, as if on cue, and 1courier checks the deets. HQ has another pickup scheduled, this one is different.
The cargo is random, it could be anything. Plus, he has received a reprimand, for lingering at the launchpad. HQ was requiring a face to face after this run. The day was off to a good start, and he urges some more speed from the mischievous ride.
The destination is minutes away, when the m-com link flashes again. The cargo is ready and will be going to the next spaceship launch. The following morning. The galaxy class spaceships, were the fastest, in any fleet.
1courier is grateful to have another opportunity, for a flawless delivery, at the launchpad. This time, he would leave the ride’s motor running. The pickup location is now less than five minutes away.
Pickup
1courier briefly wonders what type of random box pickup it will be. He grins, it doesn’t matter, as long as it fits in the ride.
Once again, he is lost in his thoughts of the cargo and the road. Which is why, he doesn’t see them at first. Up ahead the road is almost entirely blocked, by giant road construction robots.
He was focused on the cargo, and by the time he sees them, it’s too late. He hits the brakes, hoping it isn’t too little, too late. The ride slides sideways, now, out of control.
1courier braces for impact thinking, the face to face on this one, was going to be good.
