Tales of the Courier – The best case scenario

He is headed back now. It was another long run. The new ride had been adequate. As soon as his thought forms the brakes lock. He is thrown forward enough to spill part of his coffee. Then the ride accelerates savagely, slamming 1courier back against the seat. The rest of his coffee spills into his lap.

The heat isn’t refreshing. He looks at the built in dash camera and grins. He focuses, and thinks of another special thought. The horn honks twice and the ride settles back to a normal pace. They have reached an uneasy alliance. As soon as 1courier thinks the thought, the horn honks once. Nice.

    Tales of the Courier

This has been the learning curve since they started this morning. All day. It was unusual having another presence in his thoughts. However, it wasn’t painful or intrusive. The horn honks once, once again. They are on a system of horn honks to communicate. Once is yes and twice is no.

The horn honks three times, and 1courier braces for anything. However, the ride continues at a healthy, above average pace. 1courier is certain the machine can communicate in a host of ways, however, he is not pushing for revelations.

    Almost there, looking sharp!

Furthermore, they are on a disciplinary run back to HQ anyway. It was the ride’s fault. Completely. The horn quickly honks twice. It seems there is still a disagreement. All this is over a complaint from their last delivery. Wrong address. 1courier grimaces. Wrong address. Such a rookie mistake.

Additionally, he knows he can’t rely on something as widely subjective as built in navigation and GPS tracking. He rolls his eyes mentally. The brakes lock, and the ride begins a high speed power slide. 1courier knows he’s done it now.

As the power slide worsens, it becomes an out of control slide into doom. Also the m-com link fires up. 1courier thinks HQ will have to wait until he crashes. The horn honks once, as the slide continues. And then, as they slide off the side of the road, the m-com lights up again. HQ was nothing if not relentless.

    The best case scenario

Everything comes to a sudden stop twenty feet after the edge of the road. In fact, a sudden drop is more accurate as he and the ride begin a free fall into somewhere. The brief weightlessness is unexpected. They strike the surface, and rough ride briefly. Then they burst forth into dark night and midsummer heat.

The ride screeches to a halt. Similarly, he isn’t prepared for what happens next. There is half a second of silence before an enormous clanging vibration strikes the ride. A mental image comes to 1courier. It is one of being tethered.

Now the ride shakes intensely, before being yanked upwards. Similarly, 1courier is pressed down into his seat, as he and the ride rocket skyward. The m-com link flashes and the horn honks twice. 1courier grins, business as usual.
