Tales of the courier – Better the human touch

The herd of robots running ahead are speeding up. Then, two of the over active machines split from the rest. 1courier watches them turn, impossibly fast, and rocket toward him and the strange ride. They are on a collision course, and he still has no idea where they came from.

The m-com link flashes at last, however it’s too late now. And 1courier tightens his grip on the wheel. The impact is imminent. Furthermore, it looks as though the robots intended real damage this time. 1courier braces for the impact because there is no time for going around.

The machine barrels along, and 1courier jams the accelerator pedal to the floor. Might as well make it interesting. Besides, it didn’t look like this was going to end well. The machine picks up speed rapidly and they are mere moments from the hit.

1courier blinks and looks to the seat next to him. The robot turns its head and looks back at 1courier. It still has that creepy grin. However, it is very much in the seat next to him. Furthermore, the door of the ride is intact and whole. 1courier looks back at the road. It is empty up ahead. As far as his eye can see.

Afterward, he looks back at the robot as the m-com link flashes at last. It seemed HQ was intent on something. Therefore 1courier checks the m-com link. And finds, he is being warned of a malfunction in the cargo. He looks at the robot. It looks back at him and digitizes that creepy electric smile again.

Now 1courier is beginning to suspect more than just the robot. Indeed, the strange happenings had to be more than just coincidences. He is still brooding over these things as the destination alert kicks in. They are within ten minutes of HQ.

The human touch

He is more confident they will arrive on time now as he checks the strange robot again. This time it turns its head and looks at 1courier. It still has the creepy grin. Then with an oddly graceful but very quick motion, the robot reaches over and rips the steering wheel off the ride.

1courier watches as the robot tosses the wheel out of the passenger window. Next, the gear shifter is pulled free, and tossed. Now he is careening down the highway. Out of control, with an out of control robot. He has time to roll his eyes and think what’s next, before immediately regretting it, as he finds out.
