Tales of the Courier – Better connection in the weeds
It isn’t the weeds that are a pain. He rolls and crawls forward enough to stand. After checking to be sure he is one piece, he stands, and looks at the passing traffic in the distance. It is moving at a blistering pace. Furthermore, it appears to be even faster when seen from a distance.
It was time to take a shortcut. One that would get him to HQ much quicker. A walk through the weeds might save time. He remembers delivering a package to an old prospector, long ago. It was in the early days of exploration on Nalphia. Furthermore, the old prospector had been on Nalphia for longer than 1courier had been alive.
Tales of the Courier
Furthermore, he met the old prospector on the outskirts of one of the new cities. It was a hidden delivery location. Additionally, many of the routes were uncharted. Every courier in those days went by memory. Courier memory. There were no m-com links or AI driving the machines.
1courier follows the trail of weeds and underbrush. It is a bright sunshine day, and warm. It will take an hour, maybe two, to reach the first of the old mines. From there he will use the old maps. Indeed, the old maps had a record of every old mine. Especially entrances and exits.
With this in mind, he notices the first signs of the old timber work of the mines. Although the first traces of the mines are visible, it will still be a while before he finds the ones he is looking for. Furthermore, he is looking for the connectors. The mines that tied cities together, a long time ago.
And thirty minutes later, he’s looking at the first one of these. Then it takes ten minutes to clear a path. Finally, he is making his way underground. He grins. He is remembering the old ways. Indeed, the ones the old prospector had gone on about. Similarly, he knows he is on the right path. All the signs are there.
Better connection
As he follows the old steel rails deeper underground, he knows this will ultimately save time. Furthermore, he is ready to get into the backup ride, and get the deliveries underway once again. The old mine path continues dropping further underground. The old mines were like hubs that connected all the major cities. Back before they were cities.
At this pace he anticipates being back at HQ within the next couple of hours. Faster, if he could find an m-com link to borrow, for a quick call. The old mill work of the mine creaks and groans as 1courier passes by. It is possible to feel the age of the place. So he doesn’t feel surprised when the rails collapse beneath him. Instead, he swears loudly, and he falls gracefully.
