Surefooted Plans and Diligence In the Map
The road is useful for many things and is as important as the vehicles that we use to travel the same. Being on the road is a slang term that literally defines a way of life. Spending long hours behind the wheel is a given for couriers.
Boring is nowhere near how a typical day on the road develops. A good day is a predictable day, when working the road. When too many things are unpredictable, chances are the road is working the courier.
Surefooted Plans
One of the most important tools a courier has is the ride. Maintaining the ride is a top priority for maximum performance. Several articles on this site have great insights on basic maintenance. But for this article it’s about tires.
The comparison pictures are an example from my ride. The left view is a front tire that is at the point of needing to be replaced. Tread depth is less than an eighth of an inch.
The right view is a new rear tire with full tread depth. Replacing them all at once is a best practice, but not always economically feasible. Keeping an eye on tread wear is excellent preventative maintenance.
Diligence in the Map
Working the roads is also about location awareness. Couriers are always using maps even with in depth knowledge of the area.
Taking every advantage is the key for successful, on time, deliveries. Maps offer a wealth of information to help pinpoint the precise address, or select the most direct route for the circumstances.
But if it’s not a paper map, it can glitch. Or it can take the courier on an unpaid adventure, like the one in the screenshot example, from one of my runs yesterday.
Notice with a simple right turn, the long round about way can be avoided. GPS hawks beware, the circuitous route is unnecessary, and just following along will cost time and money.
Knowing the route and location awareness, is what diligence in the map is all about.
