Safety insights and the truth about cargo care
Safety insights are a benefit to every courier. Furthermore, they are sometimes acquired through trial and error. Fortunately there are many years of recorded delivery completions. This data goes a long way towards making every delivery as safe as possible. These days, being safety conscious is more important than ever. Though there may be specific reasons why this is so, they are not the point of this article.
Indeed, the reasons why safety is so important, are almost self explanatory. However, just because something looks safe, doesn’t mean it is safe. An appearance can actually be deceiving. This goes far beyond, human appearances. This has much to do with deceptive appearances. Scenarios made to look one way, when in fact, they are another.
With this in mind, to the experienced courier, this is more of a developed instinct. For example, the large cargo delivery. This delivery type has many items. Several cargo bags, or many pizzas, with a large amount of drinks. Once the courier has the cargo carefully loaded the journey to the drop-off location begins.
Safety Insights and the Truth about Cargo Care
After extensive travel the courier is driving up a narrow lane, to a very isolated spot. With so much cargo in the vehicle, the expectation is a large group of people, in a well lit area. Or a house among many houses. Then the location is found. A dark small isolated structure, with no lights on. Likewise it matches the GPS pin. At this point confusion can set in. As well as an uneasy feeling in the gut.
If it doesn’t feel right, it probably isn’t. At this point, the instincts are favoring remaining in a safe environment. Like the interior of the vehicle. Additionally, putting a little distance between the unusual drop-off location, and the courier, is a good idea. It takes thirty seconds to drive back, if the instincts are off. (They’re usually not, which is why they are instincts, or the gut feeling)
In the scenario just described, the drop-off location is actually next door. However, because of fences and property lines, it’s not visible from the dark and isolated structure where the GPS dot was located. Furthermore, the courier was less safe by simply going with the dot on the map. As it turns out, the large house with many guests, is just next door. There is a hidden driveway back at the road. It was not possible to see it in the dark. Safety insights are for this type of scenario.
With a quick backtrack, and a fast phone call, the courier was given additional information. This made the hidden driveway much easier to find. More evidence that if something doesn’t feel right, it probably isn’t. Likewise, the drop-off location is aware of the courier’s proximity now. Win win.
Cargo Care
Cargo care is one of the most fundamental parts of courier work. It is also easy to overlook. Merchants have a system for loading hot fresh food into containers. Often, every available space is full. This maximizes the amount of food placed in each bag. Likewise this minimizes the amount of bags needed, to package the entirety of the delivery order.
The same goes for a pizza box. There is room for one pizza and no more. The way the box travels, is the way the pizza arrives at the drop-off location. If it was on its side during the journey, the pizza is toast. The same goes for merchants that stack hot fresh food in plastic bags. If the bag fell over and remained on its side during the journey, the food would run all over the inside of the bag.
Finally
Merchants expect their delivery to arrive to the customer as it left the store. Intact and complete with no drama. For the courier, cargo care is absolutely part of the job. Stay safe out there.
