On the run and taxed, how to survive courier taxes
It is that time of year again. There are signs everywhere. The season is changing, bringing with it an age old trauma, I mean taxes. The season of taxes is a yearly event. With this in mind, it is a good time to share experiences, that may help ease the stress of the taxed.
A Little Disclaimer
This article is not tax advice, nor is it in any way, a suggestion of action or an attempt at influence. Furthermore, the contents of this article are opinions gained from experience and shared freely.
With that being said, taxes are an important process for the courier. Indeed, taxes are something that everyone has to deal with. Even though couriers are quick, there’s no escaping the tax burden. Run as they will, the courier still pays the tax bill.
Furthermore, the courier may get a cash tip, once in a blue moon. In the early days of delivery, the cash tip was the norm. Occasionally it would happen as the hot fresh food was handed off. In person.
Other times it would be secretly tucked away in the cargo payment. It was a gesture of good will from a grateful drop-off location. Of course every courier knew the importance of declaring the possible (additional) income.
Courier Taxes
There is some good news in this article. The taxes were just as important then, as they are now. Experienced couriers will most likely have the taxes well underway before the big deadline. A developed routine. Furthermore, the process will be familiar.
Couriers that have earnings from delivery apps, may have earnings that are taxable. It is important to check with a tax expert to be sure. Or a CPA. This is an important step for the courier, at the end of the year.
If the courier is experienced, it’s time to do some math. Saved receipts, and tracked mileage through the year, is a best practice. Similarly, all paperwork such as the 1099 form and the W2 forms should have arrived. The Doordash app has a process for downloading the courier’s 1099.
Furthermore, the 1099 can also be accessed with Doordash email. Ubereats is similar but takes it one step further, making it possible to import the form while doing the taxes. I found the Ubereats system quick and intuitive. It worked well with the turbo tax app.
This is one method to survive courier taxes at tax time. In short, keep track throughout the year. Save the receipts and track the mileage. Not sure which receipts to save? Save them all! They will still need sorting, but they will be available, because they exist. They are real.
Finally, the earlier the courier can do the taxes the better. This allows the courier the maximum time to get the year underway and headed toward prosperity. Stay safe out there.
