Old school essentials for a daring courier challenge
It doesn’t take long to find a place with GPS. It is a very useful tool. Especially for couriers, and delivery people, across the board. It’s possible to save time and resources with a GPS mapping system. Not only is the location marked, but also useful information populates.
The useful information has things like, traffic overlays. Or various details about the local businesses along the way. There are enough details to make route awareness a wonderful thing. For example, traffic jams. Advance knowledge of these, is a benefit for the courier. Similarly, road closings and road construction. All of which can be detected, and avoided, if possible.
Old School Essentials
With this in mind, it is easy to see how important GPS is, for the courier. It saves time, and in some cases confusion, or worse. It is also more common now, than it used to be. Therefore, it is a ‘go to‘ technique, or tool. In fact, it might feel unthinkable, to go on a delivery without the GPS. However, it is entirely possible.
Turn off the phone. This is also slang for, set the phone down. Then, take a look around. See anything unusual? What direction are the house numbers, or mailbox numbers, moving in? Are the numbers on the road or the house? Was there a visual on that street sign? It’s important to confirm accurate locations. Visual confirmations are best.

Part of the GPS advantage, is relying on the location of the pin on the map. Just keep moving to the pin. Worry about where it is, after the drop-off. Then spend ten minutes backtracking wrong turns, to get out of a neighborhood. The truth of the matter is GPS in, then most likely GPS back out, as well. Some neighborhoods go on for miles, and have only one way in.
This is when the old school essentials, are most handy. They can benefit a courier in unexpected, but helpful ways. Things like remembering that odd numbers are on one side, and the evens, are on the other. Address numbers do not remain sequential. They sometimes skip. Especially with empty lots. A corner lot can have two possible addresses. Pro Tip – Observing which street the corner house fronts, will help find its actual street address.
When a courier uses old school techniques, it is really just a way to use every advantage for a successful delivery completion. It comes down to a couple of basic concepts. Memory and observation.
Old School Essentials
In order to brush up on old school essentials, a good way to improve on both of these valuable courier attributes is a small challenge. Every courier knows how it is to wind up in a far away place. Particularly the back of a neighborhood, in a far off corner of the delivery zone. Try memorizing landmarks, at each turn, on the way in. Then use no GPS for the way back out.
To further refine the old school skills, don’t use the GPS to scout. Use the house numbers or mailbox numbers. The GPS is useful for confirming the courier has the right proximity. However, the actual visual confirmation of the house number, is the goal. The idea is to improve the memory, without the assistance of tech. Just some old school essentials. Stay safe out there.
