New features and improvements in wait times
One of the challenges with delivery driving is waiting. Every courier has been there at least once. Things are moving quickly. The potential for an increase in earnings is very likely. A quick pickup, and then a timely drop-off. And that’s when it happens. Everything comes to a screeching halt. One minute the delivery was running smoothly. And the next minute it is at a standstill.
There are many reasons why this happens. Sometimes a merchant is short staffed. Other times the ordering systems malfunction. Furthermore, in some cases it is an actual malfunction in the POS (point of sale, not the other) system. However, that still creates a slow down. Or in some cases, a standstill. This is when the courier begins to lose money.
Furthermore, with each passing minute, the courier is pushing another limit. The on time delivery limit. In fact, there are several ratings that can go downhill, the longer a courier has to wait. With this in mind, it is helpful when new features pop up in a delivery app that eases the stress on those wait times. Similarly, some of the older features are also a welcome assist.
New Features and Improvements
One of the most popular delivery apps is on the leading edge of the wait time conundrum. Not only does the app keep track of important details but also it offers the courier relief from a deteriorating situation. Furthermore, it was once a new feature. Now it is an improved feature and a benefit for couriers. It is also a feature of the Doordash app.

The special feature is triggered by the length of the wait time the courier is experiencing. It is automatic and will toggle once a predetermined limit is met. The feature is the chance for the courier to unassign from the delivery. This chance to unassign carries no penalty. In other words the courier’s ratings will not be affected.
With this in mind it is important to note that the courier will not receive any pay. The worry free unassign helps protect the courier’s ratings. Not the courier’s wallet. However, the time a courier saves, is also money in the bank. For example, if the delay is because the merchant was unaware of the order, it will be a long wait. The order will have to be prepared. While the courier, and the delivery customer, wait.
Long Wait Times
It’s those long wait times that help hinder the earnings. Furthermore, the longer a courier has to wait, the longer the delivery customer has to wait. However, this is where the courier has to use judgement to assess the scene. If the delivery is for hot fresh food, and the merchant is only just starting the order when the courier arrives, it might be a bust. There will be a small amount of time the courier must wait to be eligible for the worry free unassign.
It will be an alert on the dispatch screen when it happens. At that time the courier has the choice to continue the delivery or unassign. It’s definitely a benefit for when those times get too long. Give it a try the next time a delivery comes to a standstill. Stay safe out there.
