More Boring safety Insights – Smoke ’em if you got ’em

It’s that time of year again! The sunshine is hot the roads are hot and deliveries are hot. However, the days are getting shorter, and the nights are getting longer.

For the courier, who is a fan of night driving, this is good news. This also means the seasons will soon begin a shift and so will the rush windows. For new couriers, just hearing about rush windows, here is a link to an article, on this site, with more details about rush windows.

Safety is a top priority for the courier. Not only on the road but also at dropoff locations. Road safety, is also more than driving in a safe manner. A well maintained vehicle is a safety consideration, as well as, having the means to call for emergency road assistance.

Furthermore, dropoff locations, can be a safety risk in terms of unknown terrain. Tripping down a set of dark steps while carrying cargo, can be the difference between a good delivery and a painful one.

Having a flashlight, or any kind of light, even a bic lighter, will help. Although, the flashlight is less likely to burn the thumb.

It isn’t always possible to carry light and cargo at the same time. A hat light, or headband light, is effective and inexpensive. Keeping the surroundings and the path well lit, is a safety conscious approach, to a dropoff in the dark.

Smoke ’em if you got ’em

Disclaimer: This section is not for the purpose of promoting inhalable things. That being said, the old expression, is a good philosophical strategy for worthwhile waits.

Drive thru, delivery pickups, are some of the more lengthy wait times. They most often occur when the merchant’s lobby is closed. If a courier waits for twenty minutes in a drive thru line, it is hopefully for a good offer.

However, if a courier waits for twenty minutes, patience should be given. The wait is also a good time to catch up on texts to the dropoff location, going over routes and double checking cargo details.

So, smoke ’em if you got ’em, and stay safe out there.
