Make mine a double Sam – Tales of the Courier
The rain is still falling. Perhaps it always will. 1courier downshifts the ride and activates the blinker. He will be arriving soon.

Thirteen hours. That’s the precise time it takes to reach the outer lands. Furthermore, that is at better than average speed. As if to accent this point, the m-com link flashes a warning. He is in excess of the posted speed limit. Under ordinary circumstances he would push the speed even further. It would be interesting to see if the m-com link could actually keep up.
However, a speeding ticket in the badlands, is a bad idea. Therefore, he eases back on the throttle. The last thing he needed, was a slow down on this pickup. The road ahead changes, and this is where things get interesting. As he approaches the fork in the road, he is to keep an eye out for the sign. The pickup is a special case. Therefore, it will be marked in a way, that only a courier can see.

With this in mind, he slows the ride even more when he arrives at the fork. One way or the other. One leads to the pickup. And the other leads to more badlands. All he needs is the sign. And as he approaches the split, he sees a small object just ahead to the right. 1courier squints his eyes. There is a small sign affixed to a post, on the shoulder of the highway.
As he nears the sign, he sees what he is looking for. A small arrow points ahead. And the word pickup is written under it. 1courier grins. Small talk is cool. Within five minutes he is following the last of the signs, as it points him into a small parking lot. The parking lot is for a small bar sitting adjacent to the road.

Even though it all fits, it’s still difficult to grasp. No one ever went into the badlands. Except those who lived there. Similarly, no one ever asked for a delivery from the badlands either. As 1courier surveys his surroundings, he can see why. He would not be here himself, except HQ made him an offer he couldn’t refuse. He could do it, and keep his job. Kind of hard to refuse.
Tales of the Courier
As he pulls in front of the small inhospitable looking bar, he notices two things. One, is the cargo that is waiting for him to pickup. It is a large package. Furthermore, it is sitting by the entry door, which appears to be closed. Likewise, the second thing he notices, is that the place seems to be deserted. There isn’t one vehicle in the parking lot. Or, on the road around the parking lot.
Odd. Fortunately, there is no signature required for this pickup. He need only load it, and then get the rock out of here. Make mine a double Sam. Although he felt the uncanny sensation of being observed, he had no difficulty getting the cargo loaded. Two minutes later he is on the return trip. Just thirteen hours until the drop-off. The good news is his cargo is not perishable. Nor is it something hot that is cooling off rapidly.
However, he is now being followed. As he scans the rear view mirror, he can see nothing to indicate who it might be. Yet they are determined to get his attention. 1courier grins. Mission accomplished. Time to test the m-com link again, so he floors the accelerator. Twenty seconds later and the road behind him is clear. As he returns his gaze to the road ahead, his eyes widen in surprise. And he slams the brakes. The ride spins, and then all hell breaks loose.
