How to make travel planning work for improved delivery times
No two roads are the same. Paved side by side, there will still be differences in the asphalt. This is also the case with deliveries. No two are the same. As the saying goes on this site: No two deliveries are the same, the process is the same, but every delivery is unique. Furthermore, one of the things that make a delivery unique is the location.
With this in mind, some locations are a breeze to locate. Thanks to smart phones and GPS. Compared to the days of folded maps in the glove compartment, or maps pinned to the wall, GPS is a game changer. In fact, it’s been changing the game for quite a while now. Especially in travel planning. Similarly, smart phones have made it possible to combine technologies. Not only is it possible to track a location with the smart phone, but also the same device can call (or text) the location.
These are the tools couriers rely on for faster delivery completions. As well as travel planning. Additionally, travel planning for the courier is heavy on strategy. Road strategy, traffic strategy and travel strategy. It is an exercise in spatial awareness, as well as a mission to complete. Therefore, preparation is key. The more a courier prepares and plans ahead of time, the better.
The bonus of travel planning
It’s always nice to get a bonus. Sometimes it happens from out of the blue. Other times it comes from efficient planning. One of the ways a courier saves time and resources is from travel planning. This might sound like packing a suitcase and catching a sky bus but it works for delivery too.

Some of the best planning begins at home, before a delivery shift starts. This is when a courier can make the best preparations. For example, a full tank of gas and a fully charged battery. For the couriers delivering with a Tesla a fully charged battery for the car and the phone, is a good play. The idea is to eliminate the need for extra stops. Having to stop for fuel, mid delivery, is one way to lose a positive rating. And a potential bonus tip.
This is also true for meals and snacks. Anything the courier can bring from home saves money on the road. Furthermore, it helps keep expenses predictable. It’s very easy to lose track of the budget when purchasing things like meals, or specialty beverages. Especially a nine dollar cup of java.
Improved delivery times
The best travel planning takes into account as many detours as possible. In other words, knowing an area goes a long way toward improved delivery times. Having a road strategy for things like construction zones and closed roads, is a courier best practice. Not only does it improve delivery times, but also courier delivery ratings.
In fact, knowing the likelihood of a lengthy traffic delay is a delivery saver every time. It only takes one traffic jam, and one stuck courier, to tank a delivery. Furthermore, a closed road can add a huge delay to a delivery drop off. Especially if the courier is caught unawares. The detour will take additional time. Whereas avoiding the route in the first place, would benefit the courier more.
It’s all in the planning. The best travel planning is a bonus for the courier. It is also a benefit to the delivery customer. Improved delivery times mean a quality delivery experience for the customer. This is bread and butter for the courier. It is also an advantage for a possible increase in earnings. And that’s a win win for the entire delivery party. Stay safe out there.
