How to develop location intuition and finding that glitch
The at home delivery is a valued convenience. It is also a part of everyday life. Almost everyone orders a delivery at one time or another. Likewise, a delivery request, can come from almost anywhere. This is a feature of the delivery app. Most delivery apps have a wide area of coverage. It isn’t uncommon to have a mountain on one end of a delivery zone, and a river on the other.
With this in mind, a large delivery area takes time to memorize. In fact, completely memorizing a large delivery zone, comes from familiarity with each part of the zone. Not only does this take time, but also a hefty amount of exploration. Even then there will still be places that seem to defy the GPS. They will be somewhere else. Or they will hover in the middle of a GPS location with no apparent connecting roads.
Similarly there will be a pin to mark the location and perhaps a suggested route. However, in these situations, it’s possible to see that even the mapping system is shrugging its shoulders. Most couriers default to the suggested route. Unless the route is an obvious wrong choice. Then it becomes about location intuition.
How to Develop Location Intuition
Location intuition is an important tool for the courier. Yet, it’s not for sale. Nor is it a part of any app. In fact, it’s something the courier must develop for themselves. In other words it comes from experience. For example, a drop-off location is not where the GPS marks it. The real location ends up being somewhere else. Or, the location is correctly marked, but the route to the location is incorrect, or missing.

In the example screen shot, there is a marked location. It even has a suggested route. However, the suggested route would end abruptly in someone’s backyard. Or beyond. In the next screen shot, the actual route, is indicated by the arrow pointing at it. The arrow is not there in real life. However, the road to the drop-off location is.

Furthermore, this is a very wooded area. Landmarks and city lights are not going to help on this one. The one clue was the street name. This is a glitch in the way the GPS tries to map the location. It’s unclear what criteria the GPS uses to give its best guess. But sometimes that’s what it is. The best guess of a machine. The actual road, and route, is in the next pic.

Finding That Glitch
The best guess of a machine can still be useful information. And, upon closer examination of the map, it is clear the actual street is just above the suggested route. However, it isn’t always safe to drive down unfamiliar, small dirt roads, that lead into the dark woods. In fact, that is a scenario from almost every horror movie ever made. In this situation it seemed like a good idea for a helpful article. So it was full steam ahead. (Another horror movie no no.)
After deducing the likely location, a quick phone call to the drop-off location, helped confirm the location intuition. Then, a quick route adjustment, prevented any lost time to the incorrectly suggested route. Taking the time to look over the route to the drop-off location, is helpful in more ways than one.
More Location Intuition
Experienced couriers run into situations like this one regularly. Sometimes it’s the actual GPS that has the glitch. Other times it’s because the drop-off location is in a very remote area. Nevertheless, location intuition helps in finding the correct drop-off location. If only it could help the website design team with comments on a website.
