Finding a better cushion for the late delivery
It’s that time again. The late delivery time. Does that clock say ten till midnight? Does it ever actually talk, or is the quick number flash its only act? If it’s like mine, it’s always one hour behind. Until the fall, when things fall back, and my dash clock is right on time!
With this in mind, an important point to keep in mind, is time. Most often the courier views time in terms of how long. For example, how long does it take to get there? Additionally there is the, “how long will that wait be”? Time is a commodity for the courier.
Finding a better cushion
Furthermore, each step in the delivery process is slotted for a particular time. With this in mind, it should be noted that the idea of meeting or improving upon established delivery times, is a benefit to the courier.
Late deliveries. Ouch. Even saying it feels rough. However, this time it’s about after dark late deliveries. When the roads are not as crowded, and the sun is down. Also, the temperature has cooled down. Slightly. Things are already tilted in the courier’s favor at this point.
Nevertheless there will be challenges, even with the aforementioned advantages. For example, the closing clock countdown. This is the time of night when the merchant’s staff is getting the closing work done. As mentioned in previous articles this is a potential slow down for the courier.
Furthermore, in some cases it may end up as a lost delivery because it’s a late delivery. This is when the courier needs to watch the times very closely. This is also when finding a better cushion for the late delivery can happen. Additionally, the pace and flow of the merchant should be observed.
The late delivery
Investing a lot of waiting time for a pick-up, and then having to dismiss or cancel the order, is more than frustrating. It is a loss. A business loss. For the courier. However if the delivery offer is too good to just dismiss, the courier can choose to wait.
This strategy works best if the courier is reasonably sure the pick-up will actually happen. Therefore the courier benefits from previous experience with the merchant. If the merchant usually pulls through, the wait could be worth it. Stay safe out there.
