Easy run easy show – Tales of the Courier
And now for the exciting conclusion of: Don’t knock twice.
He is standing in the middle of a dark room. There are no sounds. Likewise there is no movement. At least, none he can discern in the darkness. He knocked twice. The special instructions were clear. Don’t knock twice…so he did knock twice. And now 1courier finds himself in a fix. Also he got turned around in the darkness. It happened as it pulled him in. Now he is unsure of the door’s location. Therefore, he remains still.
At the moment he can’t think of anything better. Furthermore, he isn’t completely sure he isn’t alone. And if that didn’t have his mind twisted enough, what the hell was he in here with? He decides to work his way backward, to a wall. So, he slowly and tentatively takes a small step backward. At the same time he pulls the m-com link from his pocket. For the moment there is no flashing message.

He feels a sense of temporary relief, that he still has the m-com link. Whatever pulled him in here, was quicker than the blink of an eye. Speaking of an eye. The one staring at him when the door flew open, is now burned into his memory. Red. Crimson red and unblinking.
Easy Run
It was supposed to be an easy run. Furthermore, it was supposed to be a meet at the door delivery. So why all the mystery? Yes, he knocked twice. Lots of couriers knock twice. It’s in the courier handbook. It’s part of the courier’s code. If the door isn’t answered on the first knock…knock again.
1courier grins. Internal dialogue is important when dealing with something that has a crimson red eye. Especially on an easy run. With this in mind, he feels relief when his backside finally touches the wall. At least now he knows what is behind him in the darkness. Now, he begins to slowly ease along the wall to his left. With any luck he will find the front door. A few moments later, he feels disoriented again. He’s been sliding along the wall for what feels like too long.

Not only has he been sliding for too long, but also he hasn’t encountered a window, door, or anything. Just a blank wall. He pauses to consider his next move. As soon as he stops moving a sound comes from somewhere in the darkness. It is in the opposite direction from where he is. A split second later, the crimson red eye lights up the room. It is directly across the room, as it turns out.
Easy Run Easy Show
1courier freezes. The crimson red eye stares at him. Likewise he stares back. However, the showdown was going to be more than just a staring contest, as an audible click echoes in the room. With the glow of the red eye, 1courier can see he moved the wrong way. He was sliding along the wall away from the exit door. As he begins to calculate his chances of reaching the door a booming voice fills the room.
“Greetings 1courier, and welcome. We have reviewed your performance and have found you to be a suitable candidate for partnership. Furthermore, you have passed part one of the interview process.” 1courier listens and moves simultaneously. He was about to cancel this partnership.

Then the voice continues. “We have secured an agreement from your HQ. They have agreed to assist in this matter.” 1courier rolls his eyes, so much for the cancellation. However, he keeps moving toward that door.
“We will contact you again soon. For your convenience we are equipping you with a communicator from our system.”
And then the rub. “The implant installs quickly and you’ll be up and running again in no time.”
1courier stops cold. Did he just hear that right? And on the heels of that thought he actually does hear something. It isn’t the twang of the electrode that launches at him. Nor is it the sound of the electric taser that pops him. It is the sound of the lights going out when his tail hits the floor.
