Many couriers use personal vehicles for delivery. Some crew courier positions, may have delivery vehicles. However, that is a rarity. Therefore, a personal vehicle is the most common way couriers complete deliveries. This is especially true with delivery apps. Whether it be sidehustle or full time work, a personal vehicle is the number one tool of the courier.
With this in mind, a courier’s vehicle gets plenty of use. In fact, it borders on excessive. For example, the typical vehicle owner starts their car maybe four or five times, on a busy day of use. The courier does this on one delivery. Furthermore, it’s not uncommon to drive one hundred miles (or more) in the average delivery shift. The examples above are just a few of the wear and tear conditions a courier’s vehicle goes through. Similarly, there is very little about a courier’s vehicle that relates to normal use. And not all maintenance, is mechanic only, work.

For example, replacing worn out brake pads with new ones. Or rotating those tires. Then there are things like the oil change, or replacing windshield wipers, or headlights. It is possible for the courier to do all of these
Furthermore, there’s an advantage when a courier makes repairs. Not needing a repair shop means potential money saved. Anytime a courier can save money is helpful. This aligns with the excessive wear and tear. It is expensive without any mitigating elements to help.

There are more than a few websites dedicated to self help videos. These are very helpful with things like, do it yourself auto repair. For example headlight replacement. Not all headlights are made the same. Therefore, there are different ways to access them. And then switch them out. Finding the make and model of the vehicle online, and then searching for a ‘how to‘ video on the headlight replacement, is one possible way.
Then there is the actually doing part. Sometimes that means vehicle down time. And this is why planning the repair is helpful. Not only does it set things in motion, but also it ensures the repair is not incomplete because time ran out. Or delayed repairs, because there’s just no time to get to them. Planning repairs is the next step in the do it yourself auto repair system.
In the same way maintenance is planned, a repair can be planned, and then completed. It should be noted that some repairs may be more than a courier without a mechanic’s certification, can do. For example, lifter and rocker arm disassembly and replacement. Or camshaft adjustments. Similarly pulling a transmission and rebuilding it is definitely more like a shop, and mechanic’s, problem.
