Don’t knock twice – Tales of the Courier
The rain is falling and the day is quickly turning to night. It is the weekend and the road is a living, breathing thing. It rolls to and fro and rises in greeting. Then like a wave, it falls away. 1courier guides the ride along the chosen route. He thinks about the previous delivery. It was strange, and not the usual kind of strange. However, the special instructions were very clear.
With this in mind, he is on the way to the next. It is a better than average opportunity. Not like all that business in the badlands. After he completes the pickup he can move to the drop-off location. With any luck this one would be a quick turnaround. The rain begins falling even harder. The traffic on the road is light. Which is fortunate because the city is experiencing a growth spurt. There is road construction everywhere.
1courier checks the m-com link. The pickup is now ready. He grins as he pulls into the parking lot. Timing is everything. Three minutes later he is cruising down the road again. The cargo is safely loaded into the rear compartment. Furthermore, the delivery is on schedule. The last part is the key. In all of this, the rain has not stopped. In fact, it continues to fall heavily.
Don’t Knock Twice
The rain falls and the miles tick away. 1courier drives on through the rain and studies the special instructions. Don’t knock twice. What the…? Sometimes there were odd requests. Don’t ring the bell, come to the side door, or watch out for uncle Benny. But this is the first time there’s ever been something so…direct but vague. Why twice?

Indeed, why twice? Moreover, what happens after the second time? The road is covered in the falling rain as 1courier moves in the direction of the drop-off location. With each passing kilometer, the oddness of the delivery note, continues to grow. It just doesn’t add up. Will the first knock be enough, and that’s why the warning? Don’t knock twice. Perhaps it is from an unfortunate experience from the past.
Maybe it was an impatient, and therefore unprofessional, courier. After all, it can take more than a few seconds to make it down the stairs, and answer the door. However, that still didn’t answer the twenty dollar question. What happens after the second knock?
Tales of the Courier
There is really no way to know, and 1courier has no interest in finding out. He wants this drop-off complete, and in the rear view mirror, ASAP. Therefore, he decides to make the first knock count. If a second knock is required, he would cross that bridge when he came to it. Unfortunately he is reflecting on this very moment, twenty minutes later. After the first knock.
He is waiting on the porch now. It is full dark, and the rain continues to fall. It was at least five minutes ago when he knocked he first time. He checks the m-com link. It is a traditional, hand it to me, delivery. Don’t knock twice is a prominent alert on the dispatch screen. Furthermore, there are no driver notes. If anyone ever did dare knock the second time, there is no written history of what happened.
Temptation
He grins. It was becoming almost unbearable. The urge to knock for the second time, seems like such an insignificant thing. Furthermore, it is the only way to get the delivery completion. On the one hand, the special instructions are very clear. On the other hand, it has been almost eight minutes of waiting at this damn door.
Finally he can stand it no more. He takes one final look at the m-com link and hammers on the door a second time. The door flies open, and he stares wide eyed and unblinking. So much for the quick turnaround. So that’s why they say don’t knock twice. Three seconds later the door slams shut on an empty front porch. *Tune in next time for the exciting conclusion of, Don’t knock twice.
