A special focus on food delivery fees and tips
The convenience of at-home delivery, is one of the reasons for its popularity. Not only does it save time, but also resources. At-home delivery is also costly. Mainly because there are costs for the service. One of the main costs are the food delivery fees. A delivery fee appears on every delivery. Whether food delivery app, or merchant branded delivery, there will be a delivery fee.
The crew courier knows this fee very well. It is the culprit that can influence a tip every time. In the days before delivery apps, the crew courier ran most of the deliveries. Furthermore, every brand that employed delivery drivers charged a delivery fee. Most delivery customers thought the fee went to the courier. However, it didn’t. The delivery fee went to the merchant to maintain the delivery service.
It was a common misconception. It was also an easy one to assume. Therefore, in some cases, the tipping would reflect this misconception. For example, a very low tip on a larger delivery order. It does still happen. But it was once more common. Furthermore, many delivery customers would cite the food delivery fees, as the reason why.
Food Delivery Fees and Tips
The delivery fee is not for the courier. But the delivery fee can still influence a courier’s potential tip. This was the first effect of the delivery fee. It was a little confusing who actually got it. Spoiler alert: it wasn’t the courier. The word finally began to spread. Then, shortly thereafter, delivery apps came along.

Once the variety of choices for delivery began to grow, the food delivery fees made more sense. Furthermore, they were a part of every delivery. Until the monthly subscription model evolved. The promotion was simple, delivery customers would pay significantly reduced food delivery fees. And in some subscriptions there were no delivery fees at all.
This was great for the customer. However, the courier was in trouble again as another mistaken thought emerged. The monthly subscriptions for free deliveries (or a certain number of free deliveries) were free all the way around. In other words, the courier tip as well. The thought was nice, but the thought doesn’t always count when the gas tank gauge is on E.
The Special Focus
The tips are separate from delivery fees. Couriers might receive base pay for a delivery but no fees. The base pay is usually based on a formula for mileage. For example, the delivery drop-off is five miles away. At thirty cents a mile the base pay would be a buck fifty. The courier then gets anything that is a tip. If the tip is three dollars, then the offer in the queue, would be for four dollars and fifty cents.
In some cases, the pay the courier receives, is lower than the actual food delivery fees. However, the fees have a purpose too. Merchants have expenses associated with prioritizing deliveries. Even if only using a delivery app service. There will still be delivery fees. With this in mind, the courier will need all the hustle possible, to compete with food delivery fees. That is one way to complete a quality delivery. Stay safe out there.
