3 old school tips that will improve completion times
Completing a delivery, is the goal of the courier. A timely delivery completion is even better. That would be the courier’s delivery style. Thanks to the GPS on most phones, a timely delivery completion, is a normal expectation. Couriers are able to quickly locate a drop-off location. Even in the most remote places. As long as there’s satellite coverage. However, there are places that still remain outside the GPS capability.
Or maybe it’s not about the GPS and its ability to know the courier’s location. Perhaps it’s an area that has recently been developed. With this in mind, many of the addresses in that area, wouldn’t be in the GPS registry yet. That leaves the courier with a GPS that is scratching its head, but doing the best it can with incomplete data. Furthermore, the courier is expected to complete the delivery, even if the GPS is down.
However, that isn’t a delivery ending problem. Especially when the old school tips still work just fine. For example, those mailboxes. A mailbox says a lot about the house it represents. Sometimes the mailbox is even fashioned to resemble the house. But it’s not how the mailbox looks, but the numbers it has on its sides. Those numbers are the same as X marks the spot on a treasure map.
3 Old School Tips
X marks the spot. Or, the delivery belongs here. And that is when there is a mailbox. When it is a neighborhood without mailboxes in front of each house, the house numbers are likely on the house somewhere. Usually around the front porch area. Learning to cruise the neighborhood safely, while observing the house numbers, is a pro tip. And the Hallmark of an experienced courier. Additionally, it takes a little time to master.

Odds and evens. Speaking of those numbers. They are ordered in a specific way. For example, one side of the street has the odd address numbers. Therefore, the other side of the street, has the even numbers. Furthermore, vacant lots can count by more than two. In other words, the ascending or descending order of the numbers, isn’t consistent when there’s vacant lots. The courier can be counting by twos while searching the numbers. Then there is a vacant lot, and now the numbers drop by ten or twenty.
Keeping track of the numbers is not always easy. Some neighborhoods are just not well lit. Therefore, the courier must focus on counting by the mailboxes, or house numbers. It is a learned skill. Furthermore there is no reliance on the GPS. Counting the numbers is the old school way of the delivery. It dates all the way back to the wall map days of most pizza places.
Improving Completion Times
Double checking zip codes is another quick courier tip. Streets can have identical names. And when it happens, it’s likely they’re in separate zip codes. The GPS is a clue, but the old school knowledge of the zip code, is the determining factor. In fact, whenever there is doubt, a quick double check can ease the stress. It just takes a little practice using old school techniques.
Corner houses usually face the road named in the address. The location of the mailbox is not as relevant in that scenario. Mainly because it can be relocated to the opposite corner of the property. However it is important to confirm the house numbers. In this way, the courier can be certain the delivery is in the right place. That is another mark of an experienced courier. Delivery accuracy.
